Navigating the Digital World: ICANN & The Internet Society

Who Runs the Internet?

Beyond the apps and websites, a hidden world of organizations keeps the internet working for everyone. Let's explore the "behind-the-scenes" players who shape our digital world.

THE ADDRESS BOOK KEEPER

Unpacking ICANN

Imagine the internet as a massive, bustling city. For you to visit a friend or a shop, everything needs a unique address. ICANN is the ultimate city planner and address book keeper, ensuring every location in the digital city has a unique, findable address.

Domain Names: Easy Addresses

You use these every day! Names like `google.com` or `successbridge.ng` are easy for us to remember. ICANN manages the system of all the different endings (like `.com`, `.org`, or country codes like `.ng` for Nigeria) so they all work correctly.

IP Addresses: Real Addresses

Behind every easy domain name is a string of numbers called an IP address (like `172.217.16.142`). Your phone, computer, and every website server has one. ICANN ensures these numerical addresses are unique across the entire globe.

Keeping Things Organized

ICANN's coordination prevents chaos. It makes sure no two websites can have the same address, which keeps the internet stable and reliable. This work is crucial for everything from sending an email to creating a new online business.

CHAMPIONS OF THE OPEN INTERNET

Exploring the Internet Society

If ICANN is the city planner, the Internet Society (ISOC) is the global community group that advocates for the city's residents. They work to ensure the internet is a fair, accessible, and safe place for all its citizens, now and in the future.

Internet Access for Everyone

ISOC fights to bring the internet to more people, especially in underserved areas, by promoting affordable access and building community networks.

Protecting Your Freedoms

They stand up for your right to freedom of speech and privacy online. ISOC campaigns against unfair censorship and government-ordered internet shutdowns.

Developing the "Rules of the Road"

ISOC helps develop the technical standards that allow different devices and apps to communicate. This is like agreeing on traffic rules for the entire digital world.

What Would You Do?

Imagine a government announces it will shut down social media during national exams to prevent cheating. How might the Internet Society respond?

Your Role in the Digital World

Understanding organizations like ICANN and the Internet Society helps you become a more responsible digital citizen. By knowing how the internet is governed, you can better appreciate the importance of keeping it open, secure, and available for everyone. You are not just a user of the internet; you are part of its global community!
